The class I teach is designed to help students develop a cultural understanding and appreciation of the visual arts, such as architecture, painting, sculpture and design. Lectures, videos, projects and discussions focus on issues related to the practice and techniques of creating and valuing visual imagery. O This book is a good introductory text for a basic art survey class. The principles of art represent how the artist uses the elements of art to create an effect and to help convey the artist's intent. The use of these principles can help determine whether a painting is successful, and whether or not the painting is finished.

The authors present varied perspectives that are appropriate to understanding the diversities that are encompassed in the art world. The images included are also significant and comprehensively representative.

Sometimes, when you’re still a beginner in the world of design, you might think your work is not complete because there is still some room for more – more shapes, colors, typography, and other elements. By repeating elements, you create a pattern and strengthen your design.

In the simplest form, these principles are the guidelines on how to use visual elements to create a composition. Experiment actively with integrating concepts across chosen mediums. Know fundamentals deeply before questioning norms to inject innovative variety. Negative spaces describe relatively empty areas between recognized subjects and forms. Equalizing positive and negative spaces balances solid-filled elements against surrounding voids in terms of visual weight and interest.

There are on average, eight sections in every chapter, making it easy to divide the text into discrete units and easy to refer to specific topics. Text is rife with various and confusing imagery placed next to each other making it difficult for the beginning art historian to make sense of it. There is a lack of cohesive structure throughout the text with a few exceptions. This dialog goes from the Sarcophagus of Constantina to the Palace Chapel of Aachen with no real discussion of how valuable materials are used for iconographic purposes. It is difficult for the novice student to follow these disjointed chapters to a conclusion about what art really is.

When you're creating or admiring art, see if you can identify both. They're like partners in a dance, each enhancing the other to make the artwork come alive. If you're using repeated shapes, perhaps vary their size or spacing slightly. If you're working with colors, introduce subtle changes in hue or tone as they repeat.

The book appears to be accurate, error-free and unbiased--although I did catch one inaccurate statement regarding the Vietnam War Memorial. This conflict between what the artist says and what the book says is worth noting. It did make me a bit concerned that other material may also be inaccurate—but I did not catch any other inaccurate statements. The larger questions and themes are well chosen, sequenced and organized. Showcasing the cultural relevance of more established canonical artists is a strength of this text. We are introduced to Maria Luisa of Parma immediately within the Class section (8.3.4)—which I find quite interesting.

The authors have been careful to include discussions of more contemporary art forms like new media and graphic novels, and additional examples would be relatively easy to insert into the text. Being a text covering the thematic history of visual art, the content itself will not go out of date. The lack of contemporary imagery is the biggest drawback to the text, due to licensing of the figures. To include contemporary artwork in the text, links to outside images are provided in the text.
